A typical clever front running ride by evergreen jockey Jim Cassidy saw Thump hold on to win the Group 2 $175,000 Coolmore Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) at Warwick Farm today.

Cassidy was able to hold onto the lead in the early stages of the race and had enough in hand for Thump to get the judge’s nod, scoring by a short half head over the unlucky Sweet Idea.

Tommy Berry was unable to cross on Sweet Idea in the first section of the race and was forced to work hard to get outside of the leader, Thump.

Cassidy then sole a break at the top of the straight and looked likely to score easily before Sweet Idea made a late dive right on the line.

The Peter Snowden trained filly Montsegur ran on well from the back of the field to fill third spot.

Winning trainer John Thompson was glad that Thump had finally broke her maiden status as well as picking up his third Silver Shadow Stakes in a row.

“Three years in a row. It’s a good effort by the team,” Thompson said.

“She trialled very good on Monday. The young girl who rides her, she’s a good judge, and she said if you are ever going to have a go at one have a go at this time, so we had a crack.”

“She goes good fresh in her campaign, she was a bit disappointing on wet tracks here a couple of times, but had a nice firm tack today.”

Thump started at the good odds of $9 while runner up Sweet Idea, who started the $2.60 favourite was found to have bled during the race and will be out for three months, ending her Spring campaign.
