Three Autumn Group 1 Targets For Tarzino

Tarzino stamped himself as a potential staying star with his victory in the 2015 Victoria Derby and trainer Mick Price has revealed that the talented entire will be given the opportunity to run at the highest level on three occasions during his autumn campaign.

Price mulled over the exact path that Tarzino will follow in the autumn, but he told Racing.com that the son of Tavistock will likely return to the races in the Group 3 CS Hayes Stakes (1400m) at Flemington on February 20 before he jumps up to Group 1 level for the Australian Guineas (1600m) at the same venue on March 5.

Tarzino will then make the trip to Sydney for the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) at Rosehill Gardens on March 19 ahead of a tilt at the Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m) at Royal Randwick on April 9.

“I think it will be four runs at this stage,” Price said.

“He has had 31 days out and he is an athletic horse.

“I am going to bring him into Caulfield in about a week – he is at the equestrian place now doing a little bit of pre-training.

“He will probably have one run into the Australian Guineas then the Rosehill Guineas into the AJC Derby.

“It seems a bit short that sort of preparation, so I might have to throw another run in maybe, but he won’t be doing much more than that.”

Tarzino made his racing debut with a credible third in the Racing.Com Plate (1380m) at Pakenham on July 5 and he stamped himself as a horse to follow with back-to-back wins in the Slickpix Maiden Plate (1400m) at Ballarat on August 27 and the Cove Hotel Handicap (1600m) at Caulfield on September 19.

He did not have a great deal of luck in running in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) on October 10, but he was still able to justify his short-price with a slashing seventh and he produced another strong Victoria Derby trial in the Group 2 Moonee Valley Vase (2040m) on Cox Plate Day.

Tarzino started the Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m) at Flemington on October 31 and he overcame the pattern of the day to record a very impressive win from Etymology and Kia Ora Koutou.

Tarzino is currently available at 2016 Australian Guineas odds of $8 and he is on the third line of betting behind 2000 Guineas winner Xtravagant ($5.50) and Caulfield Guineas winner Press Statement ($7).
