Third Time’s The Charm For Vella

Trainer Gratz Vella will be run Angelos Lucky Boy at Canberra tomorrow in the hope of picking up the third win of his preparation.

The gelding has claimed his past two wins over the mile but will move up in distance to 2,000 metres for tomorrow’s handicap race.

Vella feels that the longer distance will be better suited to Angelos Lucky Boy’s style.

“He has always shown me he is a stayer,” Vella said.

“That last start at Goulburn I know he won and it was 1600m but I think 2000m will suit him down to the ground.”

A success over 2,000 metres may in fact warrant Vella sending his horse to Sydney before his finishes up his current campaign.

“He gives me every indication he wants a bit of ground,” Vella said.

“He is only a young horse so I am only going to trial him at it, give him this run and perhaps turn him out.

“If he goes well I might even try to find a race in Sydney for him before he goes out.”

Angelos Lucky Boy will be ridden by leading Canberra jockey Brendan Ward.

“Brendan knows the horse,” Vella said.

“He has had three rides on him for two wins and a second and it is good to have a senior jockey who knows what the horse can and can’t do.”

The three-year-old Angelos Lucky Boy has won three of his ten race starts to date.
