There will be no rushing Melbourne Cup favourite Puissance De Lune back to the racetrack.

The rising six-year-old is still at the beginning of his spring preparation but trainer Darren Weir couldn’t be happier with the grey stayer who is showing positive signs after undergoing minor surgery in March.

The Victorian was put through his paces at the beach on Wednesday and Weir said that is where his immediate future lies as he attempts to have him cherry ripe for the first Tuesday in November.

“He’ll just keep going to the dunes in the immediate future and the next step will be a quiet jump out if all is going well in around six to eight weeks time,” Weir told Racing Victoria.

Occupying the top line of Melbourne Cup betting at $7, the former French galloper made his Australian debut last autumn but really rose to prominence in the spring.

An eight-length Bendigo Cup win was enough for Weir to send him to Melbourne and he more than backed up his trainer’s judgement, winning the Group 3 Queen Elizabeth Stakes by five lengths at Flemington in November.

Champion jockey Glen Boss was aboard for both wins and didn’t hesitate to endorse the son of Shamardal as one of the top Melbourne Cup fancies.

Boss was also in the saddle for Puissance De Lune’s only 2013 start to date when he thundered home to deadheat the Blamey Stakes over a less than ideal 1600m trip.

The one-start autumn campaign in the Blamey mirrors the preparation undertaken by last year’s Melbourne Cup winner Green Moon.
