Thermal Current has produced an exceptional run on the rail to win the Group 3 Telstra Phonewords Stakes 2013 at Moonee Valley today.

The Exceed And Excel colt came back from a seventh placing in the Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes last start to win the race with a superior turn of foot.

It was also the first Black Type win for Thermal Current, who’s only other victory came in a $17,500 Maiden at Geelong in August.

Race favourite Not Listenin’tome placed an unlucky second, while Selectify finished third in just his second ever career run.

Thermal Current now has two race wins to his name from seven starts and has earned more than $163,000 in prize money.

The three-year-old was paying odds of $7 to win the Telstra Phonewords Stakes.

Trainer Peter Moody felt today’s win was a long time coming.

“He only needed a bit of luck,” Moody said.

“He had no joy in the Group 1 the other day.

“Luck went our way for once. He was the best horse on the day.

“He’s come from behind and going backwards and he’s still outsprinted them.

“Hopefully the luck will continue for him.”

Moody is yet to decide whether to continue Thermal Current’s spring campaign or send him for a spell.

“There’s a few options during cup week,” he said.

“It could even be the end of the prep.”

Jockey Ben Melham was thrilled to claim a win in today’s Telstra Phonewords Stakes on Cox Plate Day.

“He was probably travelling too well going into the corner,” Melham said.

“Thank fully the leader got off the fence. He let go with a good turn of foot.”

Trainer of the second place runner, Wayne Hawkes, felt his galloper was brave in defeat.

Hawkes believes that Not Listenin’tome will only get better as he matures, which is something he has failed to do as yet.

“He was certainly further back than we thought he would be,” Hawkes said.

“He’s only a baby.

“He ran really good. He’s a young horse going somewhere.”

Not Listenin’tome has won two of his three race starts and has earned more than $55,000 in prize money so far.
