A convincing win at Caulfield on Wednesday has Cranbourne trainer Stephen Theodore dreaming big with progressive gelding Road Trippin’.

The rising four-year-old is yet to break through in stakes grade but Theodore is hopeful he can measure up to Group 1 company this spring.

While the Cranbourne Cup at his home track presents itself as an obvious goal, Theodore is happy to be ambitious and has outlined the Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m) and Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m) as potential targets.

“A horse like him could cheat the handicapper in a race like the Toorak Handicap or the Emirates Stakes but we’ll just see how things unfold over the next couple of months,” Theodore told media post race.

Wednesday’s 2 1/2 length triumph in the TMB Printing Handicap (1600m) was Road Trippin’s first in Melbourne and he will return for an attempt to make it two on the trot in two weeks time.

What happens after that is still to be decided but Theodore is already delighted with what the son of Charge Forward has done on the racetrack.

“We’ve got pretty big ambitions for this horse…he’s been a terrific little money spinner, he cost me $21,000 and today’s win takes his career earnings to over $300,000,” Theodore said.

Despite being yet to win over more than 1600m, Theodore is confident his charge can step up in distance and said he will even consider nominating him for the Caulfield Cup (2400m).

“I’ve always said this horse will stay, he just hasn’t been given the opportunity,” he said.

Road Trippin’ was given a crack in elite company last spring but was not quite ready to take on some of superstars of the turf, finishing fifth in the Caulfield Guineas which saw All Too Hard, Pierro and Epaulette take the trifecta.
