Albury trainer Brett Cavanough will head to Sydney with the The Monstar for the Listed $100,000 Starlight Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill on Saturday.

The Monstar is coming off a three run Melbourne Spring Carnival campaign which pleased Cavanough and if the five year old performs creditably again this weekend, he will consider a Brisbane Winter Carnival program.

The California Dane gelding ran second to Sabatini in an 1100m Caulfield Handicap on September 26 followed by a fourth to Alpha Miss in the Group 2 $200,000 Schillaci Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield on October 10 and then rounded off his Melbourne campaign with a third to Sea Lord in the Listed $150,000 MSS Security Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on Melbourne Cup Day.

“He has climbed to a whole new level for me this preparation,” Cavanough told AAP.

“There wasn’t a superstar among the horses he raced against except for Lankan Rupee in the Schillaci and he was injured.

“He performed so well and I think he is even better right-handed.

“I really want to see him over 1400 metres on a wet track and we have the Queensland winter as a long-term goal but he’s ready to go to the races again right now so we will come to Sydney and then give him a break over Christmas.”

Regular rider Richard Bensley rode The Monstar in his first two Spring Carnival outings and will be back aboard this weekend after Melbourne jockey Daniel Stackhouse rode him at Flemington.

The Monstar is only one of several smart sprinters nominated for the Starlight Stakes with Peter and Paul Snowden entering That’s A Good Idea and Dublin Lass, Gai Waterhouse has entered Echo Gal and the Peter Moody trained Office Bearer is also among the sixteen nominations.

Surprisingly Sydney’s premier trainer Chris Waller only has the one entrant in last start winner Religify and leading Brisbane trainer Tony Gollan has thrown in an entry for Whiskey Allround.

That’s A Good Idea and Whiskey Allround are also entered for the Group 3 $200,000 George Moore Stakes (1200m) at Doomben on Saturday.
