The Golden Rose is A Sweet Idea

High profile Sydney trainer Gai Waterhouse has Golden Rose ambitions for smart filly Sweet Idea who has recently returned to work after an impressive two-year-old season.

The rising three-year-old is likely to be in the shadow of her Golden Slipper-winning stablemate Overreach in the build-up to September’s $1 million Group 1 but Waterhouse is confident she can be a major player.

“Sweet Idea will be a much talked about runner heading towards the Golden Rose in September,” Waterhouse said on her website.

“She looked very well whilst working over 800m this morning [Thursday].”

By Snitzel from Flidais, Sweet Idea has been one of the most consistent juveniles of her crop. She recorded victories in the Group 2 Silver Slipper and the TAB Sprint Plate and is yet to miss a top-three finish from six trips to the races.

The tough youngster acquitted herself at Group 1 level when third in the Golden Slipper and was a narrow runner-up to Real Surreal in the $2 million Magic Millions Classic.

Sweet Idea will form part of a strong Golden Rose-bound team for Waterhouse which will be headed by Overreach.

The winner of more than $2.3 million in prizemoney was put through her paces by trackwork rider Thomas Huet on Thursday who gave Waterhouse a glowing report.

“Thomas noted the filly this morning was very good and really relaxed,” Waterhouse said.

“Overreach worked over 800m and going forward she will be a very much talked about runner heading into the spring.”

First acceptances for the Golden Rose are due on Tuesday.
