The Championships Day 2 Results: Winx Wins Queen Elizabeth Stakes

The Championships Day 2 results will be updated throughout the afternoon at horseracing.com.au and we could not be more excited for what is set to be another outstanding day of racing.

The weather has eased somewhat in Sydney this weekend, but the Royal Randwick track will still be in the heavy race and it will be interesting to see if it favours horses on the rail like it did last weekend.

There are four Group 1 races on the Royal Randwick card this afternoon, but the obvious highlight is the presence of star mare Winx in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

Winx will start the Queen Elizabeth Stakes as a dominant favourite and it really is tough to see her having her incredible winning streak ended.

The Sydney Cup, Queen Of The Turf Stakes and the Australian Oaks are the other Group 1 events on this excellent card of racing and all three are very intriguing betting affairs.

Race 10 (5:15pm) – $300,000 Group 2 Sapphire Stakes Results

Secret Agenda returned to winning form with a strong performance in the 2017 Sapphire Stakes at Royal Randwick this weekend.

The talented filly was unwanted in betting following a flat effort in the Hareeba Stakes at Mornington, but she put her away her rivals in impressive fashion to claim another black-type win.

Artistry was well-supported in the lead-up to the Sapphire Stakes and found the line nicely for third, while Missrock was gallant in second.

Race 9 (4:35pm) – $1,000,000 Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes Results

Foxplay finished over the top of her rival to deliver Chris Waller a maiden Queen Of The Turf Stakes win at Royal Randwick this weekend.

Silent Sedition and First Seal took up the running in the early stages of the Queen Of The Turf Stakes and they kicked clear at the top of the straight, but they were sitting ducks at the 100 metre mark.

Dixie Blossoms got to them first, but it was Foxplay that was the strongest late and she claimed a maiden Group 1 victory.

Race 8 (3:55pm) – $2,000,000 Group 1 Sydney Cup Results

The Sydney Cup has been called off mid-race after Almoonqith broke down after going past the finishing post for the first time.

A number of jockeys did not here the declaration of a no-race and kept riding until the finish, but half the field peeled off the track coming into the straight.

Almoonqith appeared to suffer some form of cardiac incident and was sadly forced to be put down.

Race 7 (3:15pm) – $4,000,000 Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes Results

Winx made it 17 wins on the trot with a typically dominant performance in the 2017 Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Royal Randwick this weekend.

Winx went into the Queen Elizabeth Stakes as a $1.10 favourite and there was never any worries for punters that took the incredibly short odds.

Hartnell chased his famous rival home after taking up the running at the top of the straight, while Sense Of Occasion produced another quality effort for third.

Race 6 (2:35pm) – $1,000,000 Group 1 Australian Oaks Results

Bonneval continued the dominant of the Kiwis in the three-year-old staying ranks with an outstanding win in the 2017 Australian Oaks at Royal Randwick this afternoon.

Lasqueti Spirit missed the start and took a while to get going, but Jay Ford eventually got rolling and she ensured that the race turned into a genuine staying contest.

Lasqueti Spirit and Perfect Rhyme were a long way in front of Bonneval at the top of the straight, but she trucked into the race and was far too strong for her rivals in the final stages of the race.

Race 5 (1:55pm) – $600,000 Group 2 Arrowfield Sprint Results

Derryn fought-off a gallant Global Glamour to win the 2017 Arrowfield Sprint at Royal Randwick this afternoon.

Derryn was on the quick back-up following his credible performance in the Group 1 T.J. Smith Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick this afternoon and he relished the soft track to finish over the top of Global Glamour in concluding stages of the race.

Co-trainer David Hayes was thrilled to see Derryn record another black-type race win and he revealed that the 2018 Newmarket Handicap is the long-term goal for the talented sprinter.

Race 4 (1:20pm) – $390,000 The Provincial Championship Final Results

Maryore upstaged short-priced favourite Pomelo to record an upset victory in the 2017 The Provincial Championship Final at Royal Randwick this afternoon.

Pomelo took up the running and was kept under a heavy hold by Josh Parr at the top of the straight, but she failed to extend when asked for an extra effort and Maryore stormed over the top of her rivals to record an impressive win.

Canberra-based trainer Phillip Courtney has only eight horses in work and he was clearly delighted to have claimed the biggest win of her racing career to date.

Race 3 (12:45pm) – $600,000 Group 2 Percy Sykes Stakes Results

Shoals got her nose down at the right time to record a very narrow win over Formality in the 2017 Percy Sykes Stakes at Royal Randwick this afternoon.

It was a three way fight in the final stages of the Percy Sykes, but Shoals and Formality fought off Serena Bay and it was Shoals that clung on for a very tight win.

Formality made up plenty of ground on the rail, while Shoals got to the outside of the field after receiving a lovely run in transit.

Race 2 (12:10pm) – $150,000 Listed South Pacific Classic Results

Generalissimo clung on in the final stages to record a narrow win in a thrilling edition of the 2017 South Pacific Classic at Royal Randwick this afternoon.

It was a very busy finish in the South Pacific Classic and there were several winning chances with 100 metres left to run, but Generalissimo was able to hold-off Rosa Carolina and Siren’s Fury to claim victory.

Blake Shinn gave Generalissimo a perfect ride and he was delighted to have delivered provincial trainer Garry White a win on the second day of The Championships.

Race 1 (11:30am) – $150,000 Listed Fernhill Handicap Results

Whispered Secret overcame a tough run in transit to record an impressive victory in the 2017 Fernhill Handicap at Royal Randwick this afternoon.

Whispered Secret did not have a great deal of luck in running and was kept find throughout, but she responded well when asked for an extra effort to comfortably record victory.

Trainer James Cummings has a high opinion of Whispered Secret and the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) next weekend is an option for the talented filly.
