Terravista’s Newmarket Handicap Odds Lengthen

The 2015 Newmarket Handicap odds of Terravista have continued to lengthen and he is now available at a quote of $6 to win the Group 1 event at Flemington this weekend.

Terravista opened at a quote of $5.50 when the Newmarket Handicap field was released earlier in the week, but the Group 1 winning sprinter has been friendless in betting and has received very little support from punters.

While punters are skeptical about the chances of Terravista in the Newmarket Handicap, trainer Joe Pride is thrilled with the condition of the Captain Rio gelding heading into the $1 million race and believes that his star sprinter is capable of becoming the first horse since Polycrates in 1917 to win the Newmarket Handicap first-up.

“He got here in the early hours of the morning and he has arrived in good order,” Pride told Racing Ahead.

“The most important part is still to come, but I couldn’t be happier with the way that it has all rolled along so far.

“I’m sure that he is still improving and he looks in fantastic order.

“He will get to the races tomorrow probably ten or 15 kilos heavier than what he was in the Darley Classic and the horse doesn’t have excessive fat on him, he just looks fantastic.

“I’m sure luck in running will play a role, but I am confident that he will run well.”

Pride believes that luck in running will play a key role in deciding the outcome of the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) and the leading Sydney trainer is unsure whether Terravista will settle in the early stages of the race.

Terravista has shown a degree of tactical versatility during his racing career to date and Pride said that he will be happy to leave the riding instructions on the five-year-old up to talented hoop Hugh Bowman.

“It looks a bit of a tricky one that,” Pride said.

“It is interesting to see Delectation in the race and he is a horse that I didn’t expect to be there, but he adds a different component.

“Not that I think he is going to be finish, but he has been going quiet hard in his races and he might be the one that gives Lankan Rupee some cover.

“I would be hoping to get some cover from Lord Of The Sky and I suppose that Chautauqua will be thinking the same thing.

“I certainly will not be over instructing Hughie in this race.”

Chautauqua is currently available at 2015 Newmarket Handicap odds of $3 and is a narrow favourite from Lankan Rupee ($3.20), Brazen Beau ($4.80) and Terravista ($6) in the betting market for the Group 1 event with Ladbrokes.
