Melbourne Cup hopeful Moudre has been ruled out of this year’s spring campaign after suffering a tendon injury to his off foreleg.

The six-year-old gelding was due to resume in the Group 3 PB Lawrence Stakes this Saturday after having a long winter spell.

The unfortunate injury has robbed trainer Ciaron Maher yet again of an opportunity to have his first Melbourne Cup runner at Flemington.

The injury would bring nothing but disappointment for Maher, who had just last weekend named Moudre as a hopeful Melbourne Cup contender.

“He’s had a good spell and is looking really good,” Maher had said.

“He’s a good horse and he has form around Americain.”

Moudre narrowly missed out on competing in last year’s race after finishing second to eventual Cup winner Americain in the Group 3 Geelong Cup.

The Blevic gelding had taken part in two pleasing jump-outs prior to his injury and jockey Craig Williams had been booked to ride him throughout his entire spring campaign.

Moudre will now go out to the paddock for yet another lengthy spell.

The talented gelding has currently won seven of his 20 career starts, including the Group 3 Queen’s Cup last November.

Moudre has accrued more than $410,000 in prize money throughout his impressive career.
