Team Hawkes has nominated their smart colt Headwater in the Group 3 $150,000 Vain Stakes (1100m) for the three year old colts and geldings at Caulfield on Saturday.
Headwater is one of nineteen three year olds in the nominations for the Vain Stakes and the Exceed And Excel colt has also been entered for the Group 3 $125,000 San Domenico Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill, also on Saturday.
Headwater will be making his first appearance since running fifth to Vancouver in the Group 1 $3.5m Tooheys New Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill in March and has barrier trialled twice for a win over 740m at Warwick Farm on July 24 followed by a second over 900m at Rosehill on August 4.
Haptic from the John O’Shea stable has also been nominated for both the Vain Stakes and the San Domenico Stakes and is one of three Godolphin owned three year olds entered for the Caulfield race.
Two year old winners Bantam and Demonstrate have also been entered for the Vain Stakes.
Haptic won at his first two starts as a two year old, including a win in the Listed $125,000 DX Solutions Lonhro Plate (1100m) at Randwick on February 14, but after showing pace in the Golden Slipper faded in the straight to end up in twelfth position.
The Exceed And Excel gelding has also barrier trialled twice at Randwick over 1050m for a second on July 20 followed by a win on July 31.
Bantam is a winner of one race from five starts in his two year old season and resumed for a seventh to stablemate Demonstrate in 1000m BenchMark 78 Handicap at Moonee Valley on August 1.
The Mark Riley trained Of The Brave is resuming but showed plenty of potential in the Autumn with a win in the Group 3 $150,000 Sportingbet Blue Diamond Prelude (C&G) (1100m) at Caulfield on February 14 before finishing twelfth to Pride Of Dubai in the Group 1 $1m Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield two weeks later.
Vain Stakes nominated Equinova, Gold Symphony , Love Goes On, More Than Most, Ragazzo Del Corsa, Stoker and Tuscany Hero were all winners during their two year old season while King’s Troop, also entered in the San Domenico Stakes, broke his maiden status at his first run as a three year old at Warwick Farm on August 5.
