Tassie Two-year-old Chasing Eight Straight

With six Group 1 races across the country this weekend, racing fans could be forgiven for not having the Autumn 2YO Classic in Hobart at the top of their priorities.

But it may be worth paying attention to unbeaten two-year-old Grand Tycoon.

The Barry Campbell-trained gelding will vie for an eighth consecutive victory on Saturday after a scintillating run since debuting in November.

Along the way he has picked up black-type wins in the Listed Elwick Stakes and the Gold Sovereign Stakes.

Grand Tycoon has shown an ability to jump and settle in a forward position, displaying maturity beyond his years.

Speaking after his two-length win in the Autumn 2YO Plate last Saturday week, Campbell said he was a natural racehorse who knows how to win.

“He’s a good little horse,” Campbell said.

“He’s just a professional, he does everything right.”

Win or lose, Campbell said the Written Tycoon youngster will head to the paddock after Saturday, meaning he will not get the chance to break the unbeaten streak for Australian two-year-olds set by Miss Proud (10) in 1962.

Among Grand Tycoon’s major rivals this weekend are Geegees Style and Sir Joey.

Geegees Style finished second to Grand Tycoon last start while Sir Joey was third on that day after flying home to claim an impressive debut win earlier this month.

Sir Joey faces a tough assignment to overcome Grand Tycoon but is likely to get his chance without Tasmania’s number one juvenile in next month’s Tasmanian Sires Produce (1400m).
