Boom filly Bradbury Chocolate has been turning heads in the bush since her debut last October but tomorrow city race fans will get a chance to see what all the fuss is about when she starts as favourite in the $50,000 3YO QTIS Handicap (1110m) at Doomben.

Unbeaten from six career outings, the three-year-old has dominated everything in her path, with her shortest winning margin of three lengths coming last start in the K & R Plumbing Supplies Handicap in Toowoomba.

Bought for just $800 as a birthday present for partner Peta Seibenhausen, trainer Donald Baker always knew she had ability but admits surprise as to just how much talent she has shown.

“It’s hard to know just how good she is,” Baker said.

“When we came for her first race at Toowoomba, I thought this will test her. She won by seven lengths.”

After beginning at the country tracks of Cunumulla, Roma and Charleville, it soon became clear Bradbury Chocolate was going to be too good for the bush, winning her first four starts by six lengths or more.

A daughter of Bradbury’s Luck, the exciting youngster has since had two starts in Toowoomba, winning by seven lengths first-up in the Cranbrook Press Handicap before her last start three-length victory on May 26.

The Toowoomba trainer always thought she would be better than the country tracks of far Western Queensland but said she needed a lot of education early in her racing career.

“She used to buck, the reason I took her out out west was just to educate her a bit,” he said.

Currently a $3.20 favourite to win in her metropolitan debut, the second favourite is Top Of The Rock ($5.00), the horse that finished a distant runner-up to Bradbury Chocolate in her most recent start.

With rain falling in Brisbane throughout the week and more predicted for tonight, Baker admits the track presents a slight concern as the promising sprinter has never run on a wet surface.

“I would be a lot more confident if it was dry, she’s never run in the wet before,” Baker said.

“Being race eight though, we might have an advantage with the wide alley (16), if the track gets chopped up.

“If they get much more rain they’ll probably call the meeting off anyway.”

Provided Bradbury Chocolate can handle the wet ground tomorrow, Baker sees no reason as to why she can’t again impress.

“Everything I’ve asked her to do, she’s stepped up and surprised me every time.”
