Fresh off a strong runner-up finish in the Group 3 Bobbie Lewis Quality at Flemington, Queensland trainer Tony Gollan is now considering a Sydney trip for sprinter Spirit Of Boom.

Gollan said the Group 2 Shorts (1200m) at Randwick on September 30 appeals due to the excellent weather currently on offer in the harbour city.

“There’s a good chance we’ll go to the Shorts most and take advantage of the firm tracks in Sydney,” Gollan said.

“He loves a good track. If I left him down in Melbourne and waited until the Gilgai (October 6) and then it rained, then we’ve missed too much racing.

“He’s staying in Melbourne throughout the spring so it’s not hard to float him up.”

Despite a consistent career record of six wins and eight placings from 28 starts, Spirit Of Boom has often lived in the shadows of Group 1-winning brother Temple Of Boom.

But the five-year-old may get a chance to join him at the top level this spring with Gollan suggesting a start in the Group 1 Patinack Farm Classic (1200m) is a genuine possibility.

“I’m still working out what I’ll do with him but he could go to the Salinger and then go straight into the Patinack as he backs up really well.”

Golland said he was pleased with the Bobbie Lewis performance where the son Sequalo was only narrowly beaten by the Mark Kavanagh-trained We’re Gonna Rock.

“It was a really good run. It was disappointing we didn’t get the result but he did it into a strong headwind without cover and actually got lost a bit down the straight,” he said.
