Sweet Sherry’s Thousand Guineas campaign looks to be over after co-trainer Troy Corstens was forced to scratch her from the Group 2 $200,000 Schweppes Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m) at Caulfield on Saturday.

This weekend’s race was to be Sweet Sherry’s final lead up for the Group 1 $500,000 Schweppes Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield on October 8 but a start there is now looking very unlikely.
Sweet Sherry has missed several days work after developing an elevated temperature on Sunday night and Corstens said that she had to miss a vital gallop on Thursday morning after responding to treatment slower than expected.
“She was responding well from Sunday but then I thought she was a touch flat this morning and elected not to gallop her,” Corstens, who trains in partnership with his father Leon, told racing.com.
“As a result we made the decision to scratch from Saturday as she would have been going in to the race underdone.”
Corstens said the stable was considering running her in the Listed $120,000 Poseidon Stakes (1400m) at Flemington on Sunday week and then six days into the Thousand Guineas but thinks that is not a viable option.
“We’d need to be able to get a serious gallop in to her next Tuesday if we wanted to run at Flemington and I’m not sure whether that will be possible,” Corstens said.
“She will have to make a hell of a recovery if we can go down that path and I don’t believe the back-up would be ideal either.
“I’ve spoken to her owner and we’ve made the decision not to rush anything, we always put the horse first and if she isn’t right, well so be it, we can miss the Thousand Guineas.”
Sweet Sherry scored a narrow win two starts back in a 1200m three year old fillies Plate at Moonee Valley followed by a third behind Merriest and Whispering Brook in the Listed $120,000 Mitchelton Wines Atlantic Jewel Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on September 3.
Sweet Sherry was well in the betting at $7 for the Thousand Guineas Prelude before her withdrawal and was rated a $17 chance at Ladbrokes.com.au for the Thousand Guineas.
