Sweet Idea Holds Off Weinholt To Win Wyong Magic Millions Stakes

Odds-on favourite Sweet Idea was forced to do it tough but was able to return to racing with a narrow victory over Weinholt in the 2013 Wyong Magic Millions Stakes (1300m) this afternoon.

Sweet Idea was taken straight to the front of the field by jockey James McDonald and received a fairly comfortable run on the rails but struggled to straighten when asked for an extra effort heading into the finishing straight.

Peter Moody-trained Weinholt showed impressive acceleration and loomed as the winner with 150 metres left to run but Sweet Idea was able to respond under pressure and record a tough victory; with the two leaders clearing out from Estonian Prince who finished third.

Sweet Idea was returning to the races for the first time since the start of the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival in Sydney when she finished an incredibly gutsy second behind Thump in the Group 2 Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) but had her campaign ended when she was found to have bled during the race and banned for three months.

The Snitzel filly started her racing career just over twelve months ago with a win in the TAB Sprint Plate (1000m) at Royal Randwick and followed that up with a second place finish behind Criterion in the Lidoran Group Plate (1100m).

Sweet Idea was taken to Sydney to begin preparations for the Magic Millions meeting and finished second behind Missy Longstocking in the Group 3 Bruce McLachlan Stakes (1200m) at Doomben before being narrowly piped by Real Surreal in the Magic Millions Two-Year-Old Classic.

After a brief stint in the spelling paddock, Sweet Idea returned to the races during the 2013 Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival with a win on a heavy track in the Group 2 Silver Slipper Stakes (1100m) and made her Group 1 debut with a third place finish behind stablemate Overreach and Sidestep in the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m).

Weinholt was returning to the races for the first time since he finished at the tail of the field in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) and will have the chance to turn-the-tables on Sweet Idea when the pair clash again in the Magic Millions Guineas (1400m) at the Gold Coast on January 11.
