The well backed Swear arrived in time to deliver for the punters in the Group 3 $125,000 Daily Telegraph Ming Dynasty Quality (1400m) at Randwick today.
Swear was well supported on track to firm in from $4.20 to start the $3.80 favourite from the unlucky High Mist ($5) with Skylight Glow ($7.50) a close up third.
Winning rider Tommy Berry had Swear quickly into stride after a clean get away and settled in second spot behind the leader Skylight Glow.
Berry let the Team Hawkes trained colt stride to the front over the rise and really extended when asked for a late effort to go on and score a half a length win on the heavy track.
The unlucky runner in the race was the runner up High Mist who missed a run at the 300m when Hugh Bowman tried to force a passage in between runners.
The gap never opened up and Bowman had to restrained the Chris Waller trained colt before he got his second wind too make a late dive up along the fence to grab second spot.
Co-trainer Michael Hawkes said that Swear had done everything right in the lead up today’s race and he expected to run run.
“A lovely horse, trialled good and has done everything right going forward,” Michael Hawkes said.
“He is a staying sought of horse and will improve with every run he has and hopefully get over a bit of ground.”
“I said to Tommy just ride him as he gets going and hopes that he gets through it.”
“He is a nice colt going forward and hopefully he can measure up.”
