Singapore galloper Super One is set to press on to the 2015 Coolmore Stud Stakes after he failed to fire in his Australian racing debut in the Listed Apache Cat Classic (1000m) at Cranbourne on October 11.
Super One recorded four wins from as many starts in Singapore as a two-year-old and connections confirmed that he would make the trip to Australia for the 2015 Spring Racing Carnival after he recorded a dominant five lengths win in the Group 3 Juvenile Championship (1200m) at Kranji on July 26.
Trainer Mitchell Freedman elected to run Super One first-up in the Apache Cat Classic and the I Am Invincible colt opened as a dominant favourite, but he was an alarming drifter in the lead-up to the race and he was unable to run past the speedy General Jackson in the final stages of the race.
Freedman believes that Super One would take plenty of value out of the run and would press on to the Coolmore Stud Stakes with blinkers on, but he admitted that he was disappointed with his star gallopers effort in the Apache Cat Classic.
“On face value, I am a little bit disappointed,” Freedman told the media after the race.
“He sort of had his chance sitting outside the eventual winner.
“He looked a little bit unbalanced coming around the corner.
“I do think fitness-wise there’s a bit to come with him because he hasn’t had a run since the end of July.”
Craig Newitt rode Super One in three of his four race starts in Singapore and he said after the race that the three-year-old was never able to concentrate on the job at hand with General Jackson on his inside.
Super One led from start to finish in the majority of his race starts in Singapore and Newitt believes that Hugh Bowman, who has been booked to ride Super One in the Coolmore Stud Stakes, will need to ride the colt aggressively if he is going to be any chance of winning the Group 1 race at Flemington on Victoria Derby Day.
“He’s probably going to have to ride him like a pure speed horse and hopefully he can get the job done, but I know he’ll improve,” Newitt said.
“We still thought he’d come here and get the job done, but the way the race was run the first time he set off for them he just lost concentration.”
Super One will need to improve significantly to be any chance in the Coolmore Stud Stakes, which is set to include the likes of Exosphere and Kinglike.
