Mosheen wins the Randwick Guineas
Super Melbourne filly Mosheen produced another first class effort at Randwick today in taking out the Group 1 $500,000 Turnpoint Royal Randwick Guineas (1600m).
Mosheen was taking on the colts and geldings again after scoring a runaway win in the Group 1 $750,000 Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington two weeks ago and left no one doubting the depth of her ability.
Jockey Danny Nikoilc had to ride another inspired race and after copping a buffeting mid race was able to keep the filly balanced and coax her in between runners in the straight.
At the 200m Nikolic still looked like he had nowhere to go but managed to secure a run to the outside and gather in the Chris Waller trained Said Com in the last few strides.
The Gai Waterhouse trained Laser Hawk showed he was up to the class by putting in a top effort to run third in a tight finish.
“She’s got the gears and she will relax and she will go through and take any run. It got a little bit tight a couple of times through the run and she’s just my little class act, she’s a ripper,” Nikoilc said.
“From the 1200m I thought I could win, I was one off the fence and travelling smoothly. A couple of horses in front of me were having a tight time and I was getting screwed a little bit. To her credit she kept focused, she was just too good for them today.”
Winning trainer Robert Smerdon was quick to praise Nikolic for another superb ride having to come off a wide barrier and weaving his way through the field for a great victory.
And Smerdon was also full of praise for the Fastnet Rock filly’s great turn of foot and her ability to handle both Sydney and Melbourne way of going.
“Looking at her early she was getting a bit of a buffeting and I probably conceited at the 200m that she was going to run well but I thought she had run out of time,” Smerdon said.
“She’s got that great turn of foot. She really can quicken. You see it in her work at home. Like Thursday morning Danny was supposed to go the last 400m in 26s, he’s run 22.8s just swinging off her. That’s the sort of speed she’s got and that’s what separates these horses.”
Smerdon is sure that Mosheen is holding her form due to her having a great constitution and will continue on the current campaign in three year old company.
Mosheen will now go to the Group 1 $500,000 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) at Rosehill in two weeks or Group 1 $400,000 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill on Golden Slipper day.
Mosheen started at $4.20 second favourite behind Manawanui ($3.20 fav) who raced outside the leader and after hitting the front in the straight faded to finish fifth.
