Trainer Mark Kavanagh has confirmed that Super Cool will be set for the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) during the 2014 Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.
Super Cool won the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) at the end of his 2013 Melbourne Festival Of Racing preparation and was competitive at the highest level of racing throughout the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival, but Mark Kavanagh elected to give the son of Fastnet Rock a lengthy stint in the spelling paddock rather than set the four-year-old for an autumn preparation.
The talented gelding finished a credible ninth behind Fiorente in the 2013 Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m), but Kavanagh told Racing Victoria that the Group 1 winner will be set for tilts at both the Cox Plate at Moonee Valley and Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on Victoria Derby Day during this year’s spring campaign.
“Those two will be his best goals,” Kavanagh said.
“I’ll discuss the matter with his owners in the coming weeks before the noms shut, but that’s the way I’ll certainly be looking at this stage.
“He’ll go back through like a Memsie Stakes and go on from there.”
Kavanagh said that he was happy with his decision to skip the 2014 Autumn Racing Carnival with Super Cool and said that the rising five-year-old had taken plenty of benefit out of his extended stay away from his stable.
The leading Melbourne trainer revealed that Super Cool had been back in work for almost ten weeks and would have another small break in the spelling paddock before returning to full-time work ahead of his spring preparation.
“He was in a situation where he was a bit jaded and needed a longer spell after the spring,” Kavanagh said.
“He’s 100% right now.
“He didn’t get injured or anything he was just jaded and had had a very long preparation; he’d had two springs and an autumn in-a-row.
“He’s been out since the spring, but he’s actually in work at my stable right now and is ready to go back out and have a rest.
“He’s done really well and he’ll have a couple of weeks rest now and then be back and get ready for a serious campaign in the spring.”
Super Cool is currently available at 2014 Cox Plate odds of $21 and is available at a quote of $41 to take out the 2014 Melbourne Cup.
