Strong Field for Emirates

The Melbourne Cup Carnival is set to finish with a bang at Flemington on Saturday with a classy field of 16 horses plus four emergencies named to contest the Group 1 Emirates Stakes(1600m).

Heading the field is Epsom Handicap winner Fat Al who is equal topweight (58kg) with Happy Trails, Playing God, Wall Street and Solzhenitsyn.

Fat Al will be having his first start in Melbourne and faces a tougher challenge than he did in the Epsom when he carried just 52kg.

Queensland gelding Solzhenitsyn reaches his grand final after a successful spring so far, including a Group 1 win in the Toorak Handicap, while Happy Trails gets the chance to bounce back after finishing 10th in a tough Cox Plate.

Prominent owner Lloyd Williams won his fourth Melbourne Cup with Green Moon yesterday and he could be in for further Group 1 success this Saturday with progressive gelding Fawkner.

The five-year-old has won eight of 14 starts and is so far unbeaten from three outings at Flemington this spring.

A son of Reset, Fawkner got his campaign off to a flyer with a four-length win in the Listed Sofitel Stakes (1400m) in September and has since won the Listed Tavern Stakes (1410m) and the Group 3 Tab.com.au Stakes (1400m).

Out to exact revenge for his defeat in the Tab.com.au Stakes will be Free Wheeling who joins Ambidexter as one of two Darley-owned runners in the field.

A number of mares will be backing up after the Myer Classic last weekend including Group 1 winners Streama, Secret Admirer, Pear Tart and Yosei.
