Straight To The Summer Cup For Albert

Straight Albert will be sent to the Summer Cup on Boxing Day after suitably impressing trainer Guy Walter on the weekend.

Straight Albert won the Goulburn Cup in a gutsy performance after looking gone with about 200m to go.

He rallied though and it was that late race fight that leads Walter to believe the horse is simply looking for more ground.

If anyone can read the form coming out of the Goulburn Cup it’s him too having now won four of them in the last nine years.

His other winners were Market Unit in 2003, Nothin’ Leica in 2004 and Willy Jimmy last year.

Straight Albert could be the best of them though as he covered the 1600m trip in a course record time to win by a short neck over Scottish Border.

With that in mind Walter has decided to bypass the Villiers Stakes over a mile at Warwick Farm on December 17 and the chance at the $175,000 prize.

Instead it’ll be the $125,000 of the Summer Cup over 2400m at Rosehill where he feels he’ll be best suited.

“He’s definitely looking for more ground. The Summer Cup should be a good race for him,” Walter said.

If his previous form is anything to go by he could well be a horse that thrives over a mile and a half.

Straight Albert has had 15 starts in his career for four wins as well as an impressive second to Tullamore over 2200m at Scone in May.

Since then Tullamore went on to excel through the spring carnival and even got as far as a Melbourne Cup start.
