Stitt Senses Quality With Southern Shimmer

Southern Shimmer looks like one of the most promising three year olds in the country at the moment after winning his last three races in a row.

Trained by Ross Stitt he looks like the type who could be a real contender at Group level but for now Stitt is content to keep him running around the lower grades.

This Saturday at Randwick he looks certain to contest a Benchmark 75 handicap over 2000m in a field of 14.

It’s only a $70,000 race and is overshadowed by the big events up in Brisbane, but Race 2 on the Randwick card is crucially important to the future of this horse.

The trip will be longer than his last start but Stitt is expecting plenty from Southern Shimmer.

“After talking to Rob and watching a couple of his replays we decided to step him up in ground and go to Sydney when the better class horses are away,” he said.

If he does have aspirations for higher level success then a win here is almost crucial, however by no means is he peaking now.

“I think he’s still about six months away from being what I think he can be,” Stitt said.

“He’s a very big framed horse, I think as he gets a little older and matures more he’ll be a pretty handy horse.”

Southern Shimmer will jump from gate 10 in the Australia’s Favourite Air Handicap with 55kg on his back.
