Sprit Of Boom To Return In The Shorts

Consistent sprinter Spirit Of Boom will have the opportunity to end his losing streak when he returns to the races in the Group 2 The Shorts (1100m) at Royal Randwick on Saturday.

Spirit Of Boom had an impressive 2013 Autumn Racing Carnival campaign but was unable to record his first race win since his victory in the 2012 Magic Millions Cup (1400m) at the Gold Coast almost twenty months ago.

The Sequalo entire started his campaign with a third place finish behind Mrs Onassis in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate and went on to race fairly in the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) and Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m).

He returned to his home state for the 2013 Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival and was runner-up to Buffering in the Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m) before finishing just outside the placings in both the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1350m) and Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m).

Spirit Of Boom generally produces a characteristically consistent performance first-up and trainer Tony Gollan told Racing Ahead that he is expecting a similar performance in The Shorts this weekend.

“I am very pleased with him; he has had a faultless preparation,” Gollan said on RSN.

“He arrived in Sydney this morning and he is a seasoned traveler so I couldn’t be happy with him.

“He will find his feet and if he can get a bit of luck and find the back of something that will drag him into the race they will certainly know he is there.”

Spirit Of Boom has raced at Group 1 level on ten occasions during his career and will have the opportunity to record his first win at the highest level of racing on a number of occasions during the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival.

After running on Saturday, he will head to Melbourne for the Group 2 Gilgai Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on October 5 before contesting the Group 2 Yellowglen Stakes (1200m) on Victoria Derby Day and the Group 1 Patinack Farm Classic (1200m) on November 9.

The plan is to then head to Perth, at the conclusion of the spring, to contest the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) at Ascot on November 23rd – a race that Spirit Of Boom finished an unlucky third in last year.
