Melbourne’s premier trainer Peter Moody has all but ruled out a second crack at the Cox Plate for recent stable addition Proisir, instead indicating he will be kept to sprinting distances this spring.

Former trainer Gai Waterhouse prepared the future stallion prospect to finish eighth in the $3 million weight-for-age feature last year but Moody said it is unlikely he will step out over 2000m this spring.

“Proisir will be aimed at the sprints towards the back of the spring,” Moody told Racing Victoria.

On the rising four-year-old’s agenda could be the Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m) on October 26 and the Group 1 Patinack Farm Classic (1200m) on November 9.

Moody said the Choisir colt is still in the “very early stages of his preparation” but indicated he is progressing well after a tendon injury cut short his autumn campaign.

While still in the care of Waterhouse Proisir was third to former stablemate Pierro in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes and second to New Zealand’s superstar colt It’s A Dundeel in the Group 1 Randwick Guineas.

It was the second time the lightly-raced galloper had played bridesmaid behind It’s A Dundeel, having also claimed runner-up honours when an odds-on favourite in the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes last October.

From seven career starts Proisir has won three times and collected nearly $500,000 in prizemoney. While his major highlights have been minor placings at Group 1 level, he also delivered a six-length walloping of his rivals in the Group 3 Spring Stakes at Newcastle last October.
