Spring Carnival All But Over For Glen Boss

Jockey Glen Boss (pictured right) is out for a month after suffering a shoulder injury

The shoulder injury suffered by Glen Boss last week is worse than first feared and it looks likely that a month out would be the best case scenario for the star rider.

Boss hit the ground hard when former Golden Slipper champion Crystal Lily collapsed and died during routine track work last week.

Boss was found to have a fracture to his shoulder and he was immediately sent to surgery where the full extent of the damage was uncovered.

All up it took 10 screws and two plates to put together what turned out to be two separate fractures.

He has only just been released from hospital but his spring has been left in tatters with everything up to and including the Melbourne Cup now seemingly out of the question according to manager Reece Murphy.
“All going well he’ll be out of hospital today but we’re still not sure when he’ll be back in action,” Murphy said.

“He’ll have to go back in for scans but at this stage it will be at least a month.”

Even if his outage was restricted to the minimum four weeks he would still miss a total of eight Group 1 features including the Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate where he was virtually a certainty to pick up a ride.

Boss was outspoken with his excitment in the weeks before his injury spruiking the prospects of a number of his horses most notably Smart Missile who he rated as the best he’s had since Makybe Diva.

Smart Missile was ridden by Brett Preble in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes and Corey Brown will now take over for the Caulfield Guineas and Cox Plate.
