Spirit Of Boom to take advantage of good barrier in Doomben 10,000

Top Carnival jockey Michael Rodd is certain to take full advantage of Spirit Of Boom’s good barrier drew in the Group 1 $650,000 James Boag’s Premium Doomben 10,000 (1350m) at Doomben on Saturday.

In a change of tactics, trainer Tony Gollan will instruct Rodd to have Spirit Of Boom midfield from barrier two in contrast to his last two starts when he came from last for seconds to stablemate Temple Of Boom in the Group 2 $175,000 Greenslopes Private Victory Stakes (1200m) at Eagle Farm on April 26 and in the Group 1 $400,000 Bundaberg Distilling Co. BTC Cup (1200m) at Doomben on May 10.

“You just can’t win from last and you’re not racing against Class 1 horses and you are just giving them too much of a start,” Gollan told the Gold Coast Bulletin.

“I’m positive Spirit Of Boom will be much closer in the 10,000 and he will be midfield or better.”

Gollan can recall one of Spirit Of Boom’s best wins when he settled midfield before scoring a comfortable win in the 2012 Listed $100,000  Carlton Draught Goldmarket Handicap (1300m) at the Gold Coast.

“He settled just off the speed that day in the Goldmarket and still won well and I remember Listen Son ran them along at a good tempo,” Gollan said.

Spirit Of Boom is racing in the best form of his career with three placings and a win at Group 1 level from his last five starts.

The Sequalo stallion scored his maiden Group 1 win in the $400,000 Hacer Group William Reid Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on March 21 following his two seconds in the Group 1 $400,000 Sportingbet Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield and the Group 1 $1m Lexus Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Flemington.

The Doomben 10,000 will have a field of eleven with Spirit Of Boom’s half brother Temple Of Boom also coming up with a good barrier draw at gate four with Tegan Harrison to ride again.

BTC Cup disappointing Buffering has drawn worse than midfield at eight with trainer Robert Heathcote and rider Damian Browne hoping the triple Group 1 winner is back on his game at Doomben on Saturday after finishing third as an odds on favourite last start.

Glenn Boss will have plenty of work to do Rebel Dane who drew one from the outside at ten while BTC Cup winner Famous Seamus with Ryan Wiggins on again will jump from gate three in search of back to back Group 1 wins.

The John O’Shea trained Knoydart (barrier 6) is the fresh horse on the scene, not having raced since running second as favourite to Hot Snitzel (barrier 9) in the Group 3 $150,000 Ticketek Hall Mark Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on April 26.
