Brisbane sprinter Spirit Of Boom will follow a similar path to the one taken by half-brother Temple Of Boom last year when he kicks off his spring campaign in the Group 3 Bobbie Lewis Quality (1200m) at Flemington this weekend.

Temple Of Boom began his 2011 Melbourne campaign with a win in the Aurie’s Star Handicap before running in the Bobbie Lewis, the Group 2 Gilgai Stakes and the Group 2 Salinger Stakes.

But it will be no easy feat for Spirit Of Boom to emulate his older brother’s success who after finishing sixth in the Bobbie Lewis went on to win the Group 2 Gilgai Stakes (1200m) and finish third in the Salinger (1200m).

Trainer Tony Gollan confirmed the Salinger on November 3 will be the five-year-old’s major spring target but is confident he can perform in his first-up test on Saturday.

“I’m very pleased with him, his trackwork has been excellent,” Gollan said.

“He’s quite forward. The main goal is of course the Salinger but coming off the tough winter prep he’s got a bit of residual fitness.

“Where he goes after this weekend is not set in stone but it might be the Gilgai.”

The five-year-old showed he can match it with top quality sprinters during the winter when he competed in all three of Brisbane’s Group 1 sprints.

While unable to score a place finish, the son of Sequalo performed solidly to finish fifth in the BTC Cup, fourth in the Doomben 10,000 and sixth in the Stradbroke Handicap.

Gollan said only a wet track would prevent Spirit Of Boom from beginning his Melbourne campaign at Flemington this weekend.

“If it’s slow or heavy he probably won’t run but anything in the dead range is fine,” he said.

The dual stakes winner will travel to Melbourne with Temple Of Boom tomorrow night who may be given the opportunity to defend his Gilgai Stakes title on October 6.

“Temple Of Boom will have a jump-out at Flemington in about two weeks and we’ll probably look at starting him in the Gilgai,” Gollan said.

The six-year-old delivered Gollan his first Group 1 victory in the Galaxy in April and will be targeted at the Group 1 Patinack Farm Classic (1200m) in November.
