Spieth’s two most recent run have suggested that he is more than capable of a Group 1 title and appears primed to break the drought under the conditions of the Newmarket Handicap.

Having been bobbed on the line by Malaguerra in the Group 1 Darley Classic (1200m) on November 5th, the Thorn Park entire again flashed home in the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (1000m) first-up this time, but lost to Terravista in a photo.

Spieth has been charged with overcoming something of an awkward draw in barrier 1, but has the notable advantage of Hugh Bowman in the saddle.

Spieth opened at Newmarket Handicap odds of $3.40 following the confirmation of a final field of thirteen on Wednesday, but has continued to drift to a current quote of $3.80.

Punters have continued to rally around impressive first-up winner Sheidel, who has firmed onto the fourth line of Newmarket Handicap betting at $7.50, having opened at $10.

A former Perth galloper, Sheidel has been a strong and consistent performer throughout her entire racing career, but has undoubtedly gone to another level since arriving at Lindsay Park partway through autumn last year.

Running second in the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) most notably in autumn, the Holy Roman Emperor mare quickly built to the task in spring and posted consecutive race wins in the Group 3 Cape Grim Beef Steaks (1100m) and Group 1 Darley Classic (1200m).

Placing fifth in the Darley Classic, Sheidel returned to Perth to finish second in the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) and returned this time for a maiden win at the highest level in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) a fortnight ago.

The other notable Newmarket Handicap betting market mover is Extreme Choice, who has firmed into $4.80 odds.

Extreme Choice won each of the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) and Group 1 Moir Stakes (1000m) in 2016 and resumed this time for a smart third in the Oakleigh Plate.

Leading Hong Kong hoop Joao Moreira will take the ride on the Not A Single Doubt colt, who should fly home in the Newmarket Handicap from the outside barrier.

Fellow three-year-old Star Turn ($6.50) and Illustrious Lad ($8.50) are the only other runners currently available at 2017 Newmarket Handicap odds of less-than $10 at Ladbrokes.com.au.
