Trainer David Hayes is confident that little known Spacecraft is capable of outdoing overwhelming favourite Whobegotyou in tomorrow’s Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes at Moonee Valley.
Spacecraft has had just one start for Hayes and was originally trained by Danny O’Brien before spending some time at Mick Price’s stable.
The five-year-old Galileo gelding finished fourth in his last start in the Listed Penny Edition Stakes at Morphettville.
“He needed the run first-up but I think you’ll find he’ll be more competitive than people think,” Hayes said.
“He should get a lovely run from the barrier (3) and he’ll run a good race.
“He’s a very good Valley horse, he certainly needed the run last time so let’s hope he can do it this weekend.”
While Spacecraft will run in Melbourne this weekend, Hayes is making a conscious effort to spread his horses around to different states this season.
“We’re not concentrating on just Melbourne like we used to,” Hayes said.
“We’re trying to spread them (horses) where they’re best placed between Sydney, Adelaide and Melbourne.
“We’re leading the premiership in Adelaide and we’ve had a couple of winners and a few placings from only a few runners in Sydney.
“And Melbourne, well we haven’t really got going yet.”
