Southern Speed’s Spring Program Up In The Air

Southern Speed does not have a spring target yet

Trainer Leon Macdonald is yet to decide on a destination for his impressive mare Southern Speed this spring.

Southern Speed finished second to Lion Tamer last start in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes at Caulfield.

The four-year-old will now either go to the Group 3 JRA Cup at Moonee Valley this Friday night or the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes at Flemington on Sunday.

Southern Speed is currently nominated for both races.

“I’m not really sure which way we’ll go,” Macdonald said.

“I think the owner’s preference is to run in the Turnbull with Craig Williams as the rider, but also I’m not sure of what sort of race the JRA Cup will be.”

The Southern Image mare has won three of her ten race starts, including the Group 3 The Mittys Vanity at Flemington last autumn carnival.

The horse is also nominated for the $2.5 million Caulfield Cup and the $3 million Cox Plate later in the Melbourne spring.
