Jockey Mark Zahra kept that black type winning feeling when Soul scored a narrow win in the Listed Heffernan Stakes (1300m) on the Sandown Hillside today.
Zahra, who scored a Group 1 win aboard Albert The Fat in the Emirates Stakes at Flemington last Saturday, confirmed his good form aboard the Peter Snowden trained gelding.
The win also brought up a winning double for Zahra who won the previous race on Olympic Win in the Sandown Cup.
Zahra placed Soul outside the leader Masthead who worked from barrier 14 to lead.
The race proved to favour front runners after Craig Williams on the leader set an idle pace.
Both Soul and Masthead kicked clear in the straight with Doubtful Jack, who settled third, in an aimless pursuit.
Soul ($14), the longest price of a Snowden-trained trio in the race, defeated Masthead ($3.50) by a half length with Doubtful Jack ($13) another three-quarters away third.
Snowden’s other two Parables ($3.70, eighth) and Screen ($13, seventh) settled midfield and failed to run on.
Turnitup turned in the best run after coming from the tail to finish fourth.
Despite the longer odds, Snowden thought Soul had a great chance.
“I thought his previous run at Caulfield was really good and the horse that beat him (Facile Tigre) franked the form by winning again at Flemington,” Snowden said.
“We freshened Soul up for this and that is what it is all about, getting the right horse ready for the right day and if things go right, you usually get the right result.
“The other two fillies (Parables and Screen) probably were coming off hard runs and are at the end of their campaigns.”
Zahra seems to have an affinity with Soul having won the Group 2 2010 Danehill Stakes on the galloper who has now won three races in 12 starts.
“He is a likable horse, he is really quiet, he has had plenty of problems but he puts his mind into everything he does,” Zahra said.
“Today he really tried and the give in the ground helped.”
