Vision And Power

Vision And Power is looking to get back into the winner's cicle with the Winter Cup

The journey of veteran Vision And Power will continue this weekend at Rosehill as he looks to get back into the winners circle in Saturday’s Winter Cup at Rosehill.

Joe Pride is adamant the eight-year-old can still win in black type company despite a long two year span since his last win.

It was back in 2009 when his career peaked with a glorious Group 1 double in the Doncaster Mile and George Ryder Stakes.

Apart from age and form, also working against the veteran is the distance, he’s so far had four attempts at the 2400m and he’s never won.

In fact the best result he’s managed was a fourth in this same race in 2008.

There is one huge bonus in his corner at the moment though and that’s Sydneys horrible weather.

The wetter the better for Vision And Power and the absolute best the track could be on Saturday is Slow and that’s with no more rain.

“If it was 2000 metres I’d be happier but it was a matter of getting a wet track somewhere and it is only a Listed race so we’ll have a go,” Pride said.

“The Winter Cup sounds like it should be on a wet track and it will be flat out drying out before Saturday.”

Another plus is the big drop in grade, his last start was in the Group 1 Doomben Cup won by Scenic Shot two weeks ago.

He ran last in that race but it was a dry track and genuine quality field.

His runs in Sydney earlier in the year have been ok but once again he’s been up against the best horses at the time.

He was only two and a bit lengths away from My Kingdom Of Fife in the Doncaster Mile Prelude, a horse that then went on to dominate all contenders, even at Group 1 level.

Also in his favour is the ride of one of Australia’s best jockey’s Nash Rawiller.

He has ridden him before but not since the Queen Elizabeth stakes in 2009, a race they finished fifth behind Pompeii Ruler.

In the end though his hopes rest almost exclusively with the weather gods and barring a drastic change he should be well in the mix this weekend.

The same can’t be said for stablemate Lady’s Angel which has stayed behind up in Brisbane.

She’s accepted for the Dane Ripper Stakes at Eagle Farm but the rain has largely held off up north.

“She’s unlikely to go,” he said.

“The track won’t be wet enough and I don’t want to waste her runs.

“I want her next start to be on a wet track because she loves it.”

Clouds are threatening around Brisbane at the moment and an overnight storm could change the outlook.

She’s also still one of 45 entries remaining for the Stradbroke Handicap in two weeks time.

Again that will be dependent on rain and Pride will wait as long as he can before making any decisions.

“Maybe the Stradbroke next Saturday and if not there, then a race in Sydney,” he said.
