Snowden May Hold Fire With Applegate

Applegate is the horse Peter Snowden is relying on to replicate the first leg of the two year old success he enjoyed last year.

The filly is on target for the Blue Diamond Stakes, the race Sepoy won for Darley last year before they went on to claim every other Group 1 juvenile event as well.

Applegate is in Melbourne and in good health but she’s no certainty to contest the Blue Diamond Preview as a lead in.

In fact Snowden is probably more likely not to start her at the moment depending on how well she works tomorrow.

“She is in Melbourne, we are there and ready to go, but I just want to see how she works on Tuesday morning,” Snowden said.

“I am leaning towards not running. We still have a few options and can give her a barrier trial instead. The Blue Diamond is where we are heading and if she doesn’t run she will kick off in the Prelude a fortnight before the main race.”

Applegate is one of the early favourites for the Blue Diamond following her sensational first up victory down the Flemington straight last year.

She’s probably the top pick on the fillies side of things with 19 others looking to prove their worth in the Preview on Thursday.

Kerrin McEvoy certainly believes she’s worth following and he’s declared that wherever she races he’ll be a part of it.

Earlier in the year he said she was the horse he was most excited about riding in 2012, such was his delight with her debut win.

“It takes a pretty special one to win in nice fashion down the straight for the first time out and they can improve on to bigger and better things,” McEvoy said.

“I haven’t had much to do with her this campaign. I didn’t have much to do with her leading in to that win.

“She won like a really nice filly and it would be nice if she could come on from that this campaign.”
