Trainer Gerald Ryan is prepared to test Snitzerland for the first time on a wet track in Saturday’s Group 1 $2.5m Darley T J Smith Stakes(1200m) at Randwick.

Snizerland is yet to run on a track worse than dead with Ryan scratching the Snitzel mare from the Group 1 $400,000 Bloodstock.com.au Galaxy (1100m) at Rosehill on March 29 because of the slow track.

Her sire Snitzel won the 2006 Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield on a heavy track and a high percentage of his progeny are at home on the wet.

“Some of them handle it, some of them don’t,” Ryan told AAP.

“I don’t know if Snitzerland will. She’s never been on it.

Ryan has been reluctant to risk Snitzerland on the wet to date but said that if there is a rain affected track for the Autumn Carnival for the third week in a row he would have to let the four year old mare test it out for the first time.

“Maybe she will be like her father. She is fit and well and I thought her recent barrier trial was good,” Ryan said.

“She will run wet or dry.”

Snitzerland scored her maiden Group 1 win two starts back in the $500,000 Black Caviar Lightning (1000m) at Flemington on February 15 before returning to Sydney to run second to Villa Verde in the Group 2 $400,000 Challenge Stakes (1000m) at Randwick on March 15.

Ryan then decided to bypass the Galaxy because of the slow track and instead barrier trialled the mare at Randwick over 835m on April 4.

The T J Smith Stakes on the first day of the revamped two day Randwick Autumn Carnival ‘The Championships’ is shaping up as very hotly contested race between the best sprinters in the country as well as the Irish galloper Gordon Lord Byron who won the Group 1 $1m George Ryder Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill on March 29.

Dual Group 1 winner Lankan Rupee heads the T J Smith Stakes market order at $3.50 ahead of Queensland speedster Buffering at $5.50.

Chris Waller’s glamour three year old Zoustar shares the next line of betting with Gordon Lord Byron at $8 with Snitzerland being marked as a $12 chance.

With more rain forecast for Sydney towards the end of the week, it is highly likely that another wet track could be on the cards.
