Smoko Firing in Perth

The city that is home to Black Caviar’s understudy Hay List may have unearthed another star.

Raw gelding Smoko had Perth’s racing community buzzing on Saturday when he comfortably led all the way to claim the Tabtouch.mobi Handicap (1000m) by five lengths at Belmont Park.

The dominant display was the second time the sprinter has demonstrated above average ability, having saluted by four lengths at the same venue last month.

By Snitzel from London Lights, the three-year-old was bought for $75,000 at the 2011 Melbourne Premier Yearling sale and is trained by Ross and Clint Price.

In a warning to his upcoming rivals, Clint Price told Perth media after Saturday’s race that the rising four-year-old is still displaying signs of immaturity, suggesting there is plenty of improvement to come.

“He’s still green and still learning,” Price said.

“It’s really early days and we haven’t planned anything beyond today.”

Price was especially pleased with how the potential star was able to replicate his form from his outstanding debut.

“To do it for a second time after doing it the first time is important,” he said.

While the early-career form is likely to attract attention from potential buyers, owner Frank Fiore said it would have to be a “pretty good offer” to even consider parting ways with Perth’s newest turf sensation.

Meanwhile, a full brother to grand sprinter Hay List, who had the first nine starts of his career in Perth, has been entered to make his debut in the Super Vobis 2YO Handicap (1000m) at Moonee Valley on Saturday.

Trainer Stephen Brown said a track gallop on Wednesday morning will determine whether the juvenile will take his place in the field or require extra preparation. Like triple Group 1 winner Hay List, Hay One is by Statue Of Liberty from Sing Hallelujah.
