Smith hoping for single digit barrier for In Her Time in Tattersall’s Tiara

Newcastle trainer Ben Smith has put in two requests for his mare In Her Time in the lead up to the Group 1 $500,000 Sky Racing Tattersall’s Tiara (1350m) at Doomben on Saturday, some fine weather and a single digit barrier.

In Her Time’s best performances have been on top of the ground with only one win on a soft track opposed to four on a good surface while the four year old mare has had to cope with wide barriers at her last four starts.

Smith’s wish for a good track looks likely to come true but an insider barrier is still in the lap of the Gods.

The Bureau Of Meteorology has forecast sunny and cloudy days but minimal rain for the rest of the week which should guarantee an improving track for Doomben on Saturday after it was rated a soft 7 on Tuesday morning.

“Sunshine is predicted so hopefully it will dry out a bit more. Dead to early soft range, she doesn’t mind it. As long as she’s got a bit of foot in there, she’s fine,” Smith told the Newcastle Herald.

“Somewhere around the four to eight mark would be a good barrier for her.”

“She hasn’t seen the rail in a long time.”

Smith will give In Her Time her last serious workout for the Tattersall’s Tiara on Tuesday morning and then easy work for the remainder of the week.

“It will be just slow work the rest of the week,” Smith said.

“Touch wood, everything is going fine, and she loves it up here. She’s really thrived and she’s enjoying herself. She just keeps getting better and stronger.”

Four starts back In Her Time was able to overcome barrier eleven to win the Group 2 $200,000 Ranvet Millie Fox Stakes (1300m) at Rosehill on February 18 before jumping from barrier ten when fifth to Heavens Above in the Group 1 $600,000 Coolmore Classic (1500m) at Rosehill on March 11.

The wide barriers continued and In Her Time had to jump from gate eleven when fifth to Redzel in the Group 1 $700,000 James Boag’s Premium Doomben 10000 (1200m) at Doomben on May 13 and then ran a mighty race from barrier twelve when second to Impending in the Group 1 $1.5m Stradbroke Handicap (1350m) at Doomben a month later.

In Her Time is one of twenty-eight fillies and mares nominated for the Tattersall’s Tiara and she has been installed the early $3 favourite at Ladbrokes.com.au ahead of the two fillies, the Kurt Goldman trained Eckstein and Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott’s Prompt Response, who share the second line of betting at $7.
