Slipper Hope All The Talk at Trials

Gary Portelli’s Golden Slipper fancy All The Talk continued his march towards Saturday week’s $3.5 million sprint with a strong trial performance at Warwick Farm this morning.

With Brenton Avdulla aboard, the exciting two-year-old led led unchallenged for the entire 800m.

He clocked 46.1 seconds in the comfortable win but Portelli said his racing pattern is likely to be altered for the big day.

A natural leader, Portelli is hoping the Stratum colt will be able to take a sit, suggesting he will be unable to burn the candle at both ends and win the Slipper.

“Not many lead and win, I don’t think it is a good idea to burn across the field and try to run them off their feet,” Portelli told TVN.

With Golden Slipper favourite Overreach having shown a tendency to lead in her races so far, there is likely to be plenty of pace to follow in the world’s richest two-year-old race.

“He is capable of settling in behind one, you just need them to go at a decent tempo and I think that is what will happen in the Slipper,” Portelli said.

Portelli entered his young charge for Saturday’s Group 2 Pago Pago Stakes but said he will be a non-starter as he feels it would be detrimental to his Slipper hopes.

All The Talk has impressed with two wins from five career starts including a 3 1/2 length romp in the Group 3 Skyline Stakes which locked up a spot in the Golden Slipper.
