Slipper Fillies Face Off

The Golden Slipper picture is likely to become clearer on Saturday when top fancies Overreach and Villa Verde face off in the Group 2 Reisling Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill.

Gai Waterhouse’s number one two-year-old Overreach currently heads the Golden Slipper market at $3.60 but her Victorian counterpart is not far away at $6.50.

Overreach earned her spot at the top of the market for the $3.5 million race when destroying her rivals to the tune of six lengths in the Listed Widden Stakes last month.

But, at her only previous start, Overreach finished 1 1/2 lengths second in the Inglis Debutants Stakes at Caulfield.

The winner of that race? Villa Verde.

It was the first of two big wins during the Shaun Dwyer-trained filly’s debut campaign in which she also took out the Listed 7 News Plate by three lengths.

The sometimes cocky Waterhouse has shown plenty of respect for her rival this weekend, describing Villa Verde as an “impressive type.”

“I love a good showdown. I must say I saw Villa Verde at the pool yesterday and the filly is certainly an impressive type,” Waterhouse said in her blog.

“Don’t miss the races on Saturday. They will be races to remember.”

Villa Verde hasn’t raced since November but impressed plenty during a jump-out at Bendigo last week.

The Not A Single Doubt filly arrived in Sydney on Sunday and had a routine track gallop on Tuesday.

Dwyer is not concerned about his young star racing right-handed for the first time, saying she has done plenty of work to prepare for her Sydney debut.

“I reckon since she came back into work this time she has done 80 percent of her work right-handed,” Dwyer said earlier this week.
