Skateboard Back On His Wheels For Canterbury

Skateboard will get a second crack at satisfying his supporters this weekend when the five year old runs in a benchmark 85 over 1550 metres at Canterbury.

The horse started as a big favourite at Warwick Farm on January seven but his race was over just as it started.

When the gates opened he shifted sideways and then began to buck, throwing jockey Ben Vassallo to the ground.

The apprentice broke his ankle in the fall and trainer Guy Walter was left with a mystery on his hands as to what went wrong.

He was forced to trial in front of stewards last week and there was no sign of the issue that had revved him up the week before, winning like a perfect gentleman for Rodney Quinn.

Quinn will keep the mount for this Saturday and Walter is hoping they can get through it cleanly and have their campaign back on track.

“I’m sure it was just a one-off thing,” Walter said.

“Maybe he shied at something. It’s not clear.

“He’s come through that and the trial fine so he will run on Saturday with Rod Quinn aboard.”

Assuming all goes well it sets up a fantastic matchup against Thumbtacks, the Chris Waller runner that ended up winning the event back on the seventh.

The Canterbury race has actually received good interest with 14 nominations received ahead of Wednesday’s final field announcement.
