It was a Chris Waller quinella in the Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m) at Randwick today as Shoot Out finished strongly to edge out stablemate Rangirangdoo.

Somepin Anypin led early with Rangirangdoo as Hugh Bowman took a sit in fourth position and just off the pace with Shoot Out who was having his first start of the spring.

But the six-year-old showed he was not lacking fitness as he headed his stablemate in the straight and kicked away to win by half a length as Secret Admirer ran home in third position.

It was the fourth Group 1 win of Shoot Out’s career who Waller confirmed is heading towards the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) on October 6.

“We had to get today out of the way, you’ve just got to make sure they come back these horses and we’ll be looking towards Melbourne as well if we can,” Waller told TVN.

“I think he’s got a pretty good weight in the Epsom (58kg) considering his class.

“It’s very hard to get a good horse. We say we do a great job to get them fit for a race but they probably get themselves fit.”

Bowman was full of praise for both Shoot Out and Rangirangdoo as well as Waller’s ability to get Shoot Out’s fitness levels up for the first-up test.

“As the line drew closer I drew further away. They are two wonderful horses and it’s a privilege to ride them,” Bowman said.

“That’s a good effort, he’s that type of horse, this is trip. I think sometimes we get carried with wasting runs over shorter trips. Chris has done a great job.”

Plenty of money came for Patinack’s All Too Hard prior to the race but the boom colt missed the start and eventually finished three lengths off the winner in fourth position.
