Golden Slipper winning jockey Blake Shinn knows that glamour colt Capitalist can bounce back from his shock defeat in the Group 3 $150,000 Smithfield RSL Club San Domenico Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill last Saturday.
The 2015 Golden Slipper winner was a notable drifter in the betting pre-race but was still sent out as the $2.50 favourite after easing from $2 on track.
The Peter and Paul Snowden trained Capitalist was travelling okay in the run but failed to fire in the straight and missed a place when fourth to Star Turn in the San Domenico Stakes.
Even though Capitalist was beaten three and a quarter lengths by the Team Hawkes trained colt, Shinn is confident that the Written Tycoon colt will redeem himself in the near future.
“Obviously disappointed that the champ Capitalist went under today (Saturday) but the history books proved right. He’ll bounce back!” Shinn tweeted on Saturday night.
Capitalist was having his first run back since winning the Group 1 $3.5m Longines Golden Slipper (1200m) at Rosehill during the Sydney Autumn Carnival on a good track, but Shinn was reluctant to blame last Saturday’s Soft 7 track for his shock first up defeat.
Shinn was more inclined to blame the 60kg the colt was asked to carry as the main reason for his first up failure, not the rain affected track.
“He tried hard. Throughout the race I was supremely confident, he’d travelled beautifully, everything set up nicely for him to win,” Shinn said.
“He ranged up at the 350m but I just feel the 60 kilos was just too big an ask today. He seemed to handle the ground.”
Following his San Domenico Stakes defeat, Capitalist has drifted in the betting to $8 with Ladbrokes.com.au in the Group 1 $1m Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill on September 10 behind co-favourites Impending and Yankee Rose at $7 while Star Turn is rated a $9 chance.
John O’Shea’s promising colt Impending is due to resume following a second and a win in two recent barrier trials at Randwick and Warwick Farm while Group 1 Inglis Sires’ winner Yankee Rose is also ready to hit the tracks following a fourth in a 850m Sunshine Coast barrier trial on August 2.
Golden Rose Stakes market order at Ladbrokes.com.au: $7 Impending, Yankee Rose, $8 Capitalist, $9 Star Turn, $11 El Divino, Telperion, $13 Good Standing, Mediterranean, Russian Revolution, $15 Derryn, Omei Sword, Tango Rain.
