Sheidel set for redemption in Robert Sangster Stakes

Lindsay Park’s Group 1 winning mare Sheidel is ready for redemption when she lines up in the Group 1 $1m Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville on Saturday.

Co-trainer David Hayes said that Sheidel is in fine shape to go one better this year after finishing an unlucky second to Precious Gem in the 2016 running of the Robert Sangster Stakes.

“If the interference wasn’t there (last year) she probably would have won,’’ Hayes told The Advertiser.

“She had a couple of issues which we’ve managed to fix and now she’s a happy horse and when they are happy they normally run accordingly.’’

Hayes has tuned up Sheidel with an impressive jump out win at Geelong and with Hong Kong’s Magic Man Joao Moreira to ride again, he is tipping her very hard to beat.

“She dominated her trial,’’ Hayes said.

“She won by about three lengths and looked to be going along really well.”

Moreira is hoping to keep his winning association with Sheidel intact after having ridden the mare twice for two wins in the Group 3 $200,000 Sensis Stakes (1100m) at Flemington during the 2016 Melbourne Carnival and in the Group 1 $500,000 The Resimax Group Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield in the Autumn.

Sheidel has had two runs since her Oakleigh Plate win for a fourth with Damien Oliver on board in the Group 1 $1.25m Lexus Newmarket Handicap (1200m) down the Flemington straight on March 11 followed by a sixth to Silent Sedition for Blake Shinn in the Group 1 $500,000 Keogh Homes William Reid Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on March 24.

The Lindsay Park Team of David and Ben Hayes and Top Dabernig will also saddle up new stable acquisition Miss Gunpowder who was a first up winner for the training partnership in a 1200m BenchMark 90 Handicap at Caulfield on April 15.

In form apprentice Beau Mertens rode Miss Gunpowder to victory at Caulfield but senior jockey Dwayne Dunn will take over the reins in the Robert Sangster Stakes.

“She was impressive,’’ Ben Hayes said.

“She obviously spelled really well and looks to have come back in great order, she definitely knows her way around Morphettville.”

Miss Gunpowder was formerly trained by leading Adelaide trainer Phillip Stokes and has two wins and two placings from six outings on the Morphettville track as well as a win on the Morphettville Parks circuit.

Sheidel was drawn barrier ten in the twenty horse Robert Sangster Stakes field plus two emergencies while Miss Gunpowder drew out further at fifteen and the Lindsay Park Team’s third runner Hear The Chant has drawn even wider at eighteen.
