She Will Reign is an Amazing Silver Slipper Stakes Winner

She Will Reign is a dominant favourite in 2017 Golden Slipper betting markets after overcoming a horror start to comfortably win the Group 2 Silver Slipper Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill Gardens this afternoon.

The Manhattan Rain filly appeared down and out when she stood in the barriers in the Silver Slipper and her talented rivals all began well, but jockey Ben Melham remained calm on the two-year-old as Veranillo and Mystic Empire showed the early speed.

She Will Reign hugged the rails rounding onto the final straight and had the race won 300m from home; jogging past her rivals with complete ease and eventually finding the line two lengths ahead of Veranillo and Showtime.

Trainer Gary Portelli was understandably thrilled that She Will Reign continued her unbeaten career start through the Silver Slipper Stakes and believes that the performance suggests she is a serious Golden Slipper contender.

“I actually came here thinking she’d miss the start here, because there’s so much expectation on,” Portelli said.

“She half missed the start in the Inglis race, but she’s so relaxed.

“I tend to think that on race day, she goes into a trance or something because she’s really quiet.

“The gates open and she just stood there. We see what she does at track work and know she’s got a big turn of foot, it’s just a matter of having something like that happen today to show us that she can come from behind.

“She works with a horse at trackwork and she doesn’t touch the bridle until the rider asks her to go, so it was perfect education for her today going forward.

“I think now we’ve got a true chance at a Golden Slipper.

“She’ll go home and eat her dinner. She’s so cool, calm and collected and is a blessing to us.”

She Will Reign has now all three of her career starts, which also included a dominant triumph in the Inglis Nursery (1000m) in December.
