Sepoy (pictured) is unlikely to run in the Patinack Farm Classic against Black Caviar

It was a clash many had already matched up in their minds after Sepoy’s dominant win in the Manikato Stakes last weekend but the Darley champion is next to no chance of facing Black Caviar in the Patinack Farm Classic this spring.

Many consider him the only horse in the country with any hope of bringing down the unbeaten super mare but Peter Snowden remains adamant he won’t deviate from an already planned path.

Sepoy jumped to open company for the first time at Moonee Valley last Friday night and even after missing the start and fighting to hold his spot at the front he still had far too much for his rivals and breezed away down the straight.

He’ll once again face open horses at his next start in the Group 2 Caulfield Sprint on October 15 before dropping back to three year old company for the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes.

That’s the race he would have to bypass if he were to face Black Caviar in the Patinack but given he’s a shoe in to pick up another Group 1 in the $500,000 Coolmore it’s understandable why they are in no rush to take her on.

“We have planned a five-race program for Sepoy this spring campaign and we will probably stick to that,” Snowden said.

“The race we want to win is the Coolmore Stud Stakes on Derby Day so that is our focus.”

Snowden’s other top three year old Helmet hasn’t been forgotten about either and his spring program is no less arduous.

He’s set for a start in Australia’s premiere weight for age contest, the Cox Plate, should he run to standard in the Caulfield Guineas this weekend.

“We have had the Cox Plate in mind for Helmet all spring, it’s not an after thought to go for that race,” Snowden said.

“But Helmet would need to be at his very top to run in a Cox Plate.”
