Sepoy Will Be Top Weight In Oakleigh Plate

Sepoy may have claimed the distinguished honour of being named the world’s premier three year old sprinter but the honour is going to cost him on raceday.

Sepoy is currently being prepared for a one race campaign in Australia before being sent to the Dubai World Cup meeting and eventually to England.

He’s due to run in the Oakleigh Plate next month but he’ll likely do so with the top weight.

Racing Victoria handicapper Neil Jennings said the 123 rating given to him last week showed there was no option other than to give him the 58kg maximum in the February 25 feature.

The only way this wouldn’t happen would be in the unlikely scenario that Black Caviar or Hay List also contested the race.

This means he’ll have 2.5kg more than what the average three year old would carry and puts him a kilo up on what Fastnet Rock had when he won the race in 2005.

“He has tasted defeat only once in an 11-start career and being a four-time Group 1 winner, his racetrack performances are far superior to those of Fastnet Rock,” Jennings said.

While the Snowden camp are confident Sepoy could handle such a weight they’re still not guaranteeing it’s something they’ll make him do.

Paul Snowden says they’d be happy to go to Dubai after two trials if it was deemed a better option.

That being said there is a strong temptation to claim his fifth Group 1 in Australia before Dubai and the Golden Shaheen on March 31.

“No decision has been made. He (Sepoy) is good enough to carry that weight,” Snowden said.
