Sepoy The 2011 Golden Slipper Champion

Sepoy wins the 2011 Golden Slipper but not before even more of the drama which we’ve come to expect throughout the lead up to the $3.5 million event.

Just seconds before the race Smart Missile was scratched in the barriers resulting in stern protests from  jockey Glen Boss.

As that was taking place Fast And Sexy had similar barrier issues and joined the second favourite as a late scratching.

It was a horrible shame for the makeup of the race with many punters excited about the Sepoy Smart Missile matchup on a dead track.

When they jumped Karuta Queen charged to the front and didn’t let up by showing us the blistering pace being talked about all week.

When they straightened she was a couple clear but  she’d run her race and set it up perfectly for Sepoy a couple of spots back.

He poked his head out as soon as they rounded the bend and from there he was never going anywhere but forwards as he charged to the line to win by a clear margin.

Mosheen was the best of the race and certainly surprised more than a few punters with her second placing coming at huge odds.

You have to feel for Elite Falls which was beaten by the barrier draw but if you watch a replay of the race take your eyes off Sepoy for a second , watch her rails run from last to third down the home strait, certainly a very special filly.

The day belongs to Sepoy though wining the race for Peter Snowden and showing us a rare glimpse of true emotion from one of Australia’s best trainers.

He works tirelessly and gives plenty of credit to his team but this is the reason why some of the world’s top owners chose him as their main trainer.

A special day too for Kerrin McEvoy who didn’t do a lot purely because he didn’t have to, a special moment for him aboard a once in a decade two-year-old.

Sepoy will stay in Australia for now but an overseas campaign seems almost a certainty in the next couple of years.

Hopefully he stays long enough to get a rematch with Smart Missile after the most heartbreaking of exits for Anthony Cummings and his team.
