As the European contingent continues to assemble overseas the number of promising horses targeting the 2011 Melbourne Cup could be bigger than ever.

Of course quarantine problems continue to hamper discussions however assuming they are sorted out (as we are assured) there could be a flood of talent hitting our shores.

The latest on the list if from the highly successful Dermot Wells stable.

Sense Of Purpose is an Irish based mare and if Wells considers her a Melbourne Cup chance than she almost certainly is.

He’s won the title twice before with Vintage Crop in 1993 as well as Media Puzzle in 2002.

Her next start is due to be in the Challenge Stakes, the world’s richest handicap.

The four year old is fresh of a commanding win in the Listed Challenge Stakes at Leopardstown just a week ago.

“This (Challenge Stakes) is a lucky race for us,” Weld said.

“We have won it six times in the last 10 years.

“We have won it four in a row now.

“Profound Beauty and Vinnie Roe won it three times each so she (Sense Of Purpose) had a hard act to follow.”

Profound Beauty was the 2008 Challenge Stakes champion, the same year she also travelled to Australian for the Melbourne Cup.

She ran a good race as well eventually finishing fifth behind Viewed in a famous win for Bart Cummings.

It wasn’t her only trip either, last year she also ran in the Cup but she never managed to find a spot after jumping from out wide and she languished nearly 20 lengths off the winner Americain.

Vinnie Roe is another of the Wells horses to come down under and he figured on more than one occasion.

His first trip was alongside Media Puzzle in 2002 and he was credible in fourth place behind his stable mate.

In 2004 he was back and this time he went even better pushing Makybe Diva all the way to the line before having to settle in second spot.

Things were a little tougher in 2005 and that time he could only manage eighth place behind the three time champion.

With so many horse giving Wells such a good read of form he is very confident Sense Of Purpose is the right kind of horse to give him a third Melbourne Cup.

“She got a very good ride (from Put Smullen),” he said.

“She is a very genuine filly who has improved as the years have gone on.

“We’ll see where we go.

“She’ll get an entry for the Melbourne Cup.

“I’m not saying she will go but she will get an entry.

“She stays well. Ground wise, she’s adaptable, but firm would be best.”
