Connections of Sell In May went to Flemington with little expectation but came away with a debut win in the Spotless Plate (2YO, 1000m).

The John Sadler-trained filly was generally thought of as nice type who will be better at three.

Being a daughter of Starcraft and Savannah Rain (by Thunder Gulch) it is considered she will get more ground in time.

But no one told Sell In May about the script.

The $NZ100,000 buy recouped half her purchase price with a last stride win over Glimmer with Donna Cattiva third.

Jockey Stephen Baster settled fifth in a field of sixth without cover coming down the Flemington straight early.

Chris Symons aboard Glimmer had an easy lead and was doing his best to keep the pace slow.

That horse was keen and Symons let her go full pace from the 250m.

From the 300m, Sell In May and Donna Cattiva, who had settled fourth, made runs together.

Donna Cattiva couldn’t match Sell In May but Glimmer fought hard only to be nabbed in the last stride.

All horses appeared to have their chance.

“It is really nice when you don’t expect a lot and they do that,” said Troy Corstens, Sadler’s stable foreman.

“Winning this money gives us a few options now.

“We will think about slowing down and giving her a crack at something better in the autumn.

“On the pedigree page, a two-year-old winner always helps.

“She looked like she was getting a bit tired 100m out but came again, so it was a really gutsy win.”

“We were in  New Zealand looking for a filly for about $80,000 but went to $100,000.”

The win was a rare but welcomed city success for Baster.

“She is a beautiful filly to look at and she trialled well the other day,” Baster said.

“I wanted to slot in and get a bit of cover but they kept steadying in front on me and I was left outside of them.

“She was still pretty happy.

“She has a lot to learn and she is going to keep improving and I think she did it pretty easy today.”

Harpers was a late scratching before the race.
